  • For the next-generation model, we want to eradicate complaints about the truck bed !

Consumers worry about corrosion, dents and punctures, and need to add costly, heavy bedliners to protect their truck beds. There must be an optimum material that satisfies both weight reduction and elimination of the complaints of vehicle users ?

Auto manufacturer Z / Body Design
Points on the Resolution
  1. Teijin Automotive Technologies has produced a large number of composite pickup truck beds molded at their facilities and delivered directly toauto manufacturers. Teijin Automotive Technologies is unique in the fact that they compound their own composite materials, and can design and manufacture the component.
  2. In addition to GF-SMC, Teijin Automotive Technologies proposed a truck bed using their original raw material, Sereebo® (A nylon reinforced carbon fiber thermoplastic).
  3. After evaluating the superior features of Sereebo® including weight reduction and shock resistance, we decided to collaborate with Teijin Automotive Technologies on the design.
  4. We are able to consult Teijin Automotive Technologies from the initial stage of development, and they not only support the use of composites but also multi-material designs.
  5. In addition to solving the above two issues, they also proposed added value to expand the load by utilizing the freedom of compression molding that is unique to composites.

Result

The superiority of Teijin Automotive Technologies and their proprietary composite material solved a number of issues simultaneously !

According to the person in charge at Teijin Automotive Technologies, they carry out all processes, from raw material production to molding, at their manufacturing facilities. They have delivered a large number of composite truck beds to auto manufacturers. In addition to GF-SMC, they also proposed Sereebo®. The proposal was optimum for the next-generation model.

Their proposal appealed to our design team, and truck beds using Sereebo® will therefore be designed with Teijin Automotive Technologies.

“We found that Sereebo® reduces the weight by approximately 40% compared to steel. It also has about ten times higher shock resistance, and is superior in dent resistance and corrosion resistance, which will extend the product life. Moreover, a complicated design can be molded all at once, which significantly reduces the number of parts andreduces manufacturing complexity.” (Mr.U)

In addition to the product’s features, there are many things that Teijin Automotive Technologies, a global Tier1 supplier, can do, which translate into our advantage, and this is why we chose Teijin.

“Teijin Automotive Technologies will provide us with various design proposals from the initial stage of development. They not only support the use of composites but also multi-material design through the selection of right materials in right places. And more importantly, they have R&D and production bases in the major areas where the world’s auto manufacturers are located, enabling us to receive one-stop shop services.” (Mr.U)

Presently, while consulting with Teijin Automotive Technologies, the design of the next-generation model is progressing seamlessly.

This solution solved all of these issues.
